This study is aimed at investigating how students of AME Zion Girls Senior High School in the Effutu Municipality, Winneba performance can be improved through activity based approach on the concept of acids and bases. Fifty Senior High School students were purposively sampled for the study. The nature of the study was an action research.  The pretest and the posttest research design was used, the same participants were pre tested and post tested  to find the effect of the intervention, five science teachers were selected for the research. The instruments for the study were test, observation, questionnaire and interview. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in terms of frequencies, mean percentages and standard deviation. The pre intervention and post intervention findings revealed a remarkable improvement in the students’ performance. The findings of this research indicated that, practical activity improves students’ performance and understanding of science concepts. Observation of students revealed that they were highly excited when taught using practical activities. It is recommended that teachers consider the use of activity method during instructional period more than the lecture method to sustain student’s interest as well as improve their performance in science.
